There’s a higher rate of depression now than during the Great Depression This isn’t actually a new figure, it’s around for a while, some time during the late 20th century, Americans found a way to be depressed by comfort. And as it turns out the main culprit for this depression is movies, which promise a world that real life, despite all its comforts, will never, ever provide.  This isn’t referring to fantasy movies, or sci-fi, or other conventionally unrealistic movies, it’s referring to movies set in the real world, featuring “real people” who are supposed to live realistic lives. The problem is they don’t, they follow a script that life very rarely does, they follow a script in which happiness is either assured by the opening line, or sorrow is qualified by the heroism attached to it. The problem is, this was created as escapism, but after well over half a century of it being the standard held up to the nation’s youth, it became the expectation, an expectation that couldn’t be reached, even with the luxuries of today.
